synopsis:
It is the 1958 Springfield High School senior prom, and four teenage girls who are the school’s “trophy-winning” song leaders are asked to step in as the entertainment. They are replacing the boys’ glee club, the Crooning Crab Cakes, whose lead singer was caught smoking behind the girls’ locker room and suspended from school.
As they sing and dance to popular songs of the 1950s, tension between two of the girls, Betty Jean and Cindy Lou, increases. They fight about a boy, but eventually make-up as the other girls, Missy and Suzy, also sing about their loves. Act One culminates with the vote for the “Queen of Your Dreams,” the prom queen.
Act Two takes place ten years later, at the girls’ ten year reunion. The girls have again been asked to provide the entertainment. Suzy, Missy, and Betty Jean stayed in Springfield after high school, while Cindy Lou went to Hollywood before coming back to Springfield. Each of the girls tells the story of the man in her life and what has happened since high school. The evening ends as magically as it began.

Welcome to the 10-Minute Play Festival! Now in its third year, this wonderful event started as a training initiative and continues to welcome aspiring creatives to Kanata Theatre.
This year the festival includes seven 10-minute plays. Our community of budding playwrights continues to grow with the addition of a writer’s circle to complement our mentoring program. This year, the plays were adjudicated in March and these seven were selected. This wonderfully creative format offers a wide variety of shows in an hour and a half, and features many newcomers working alongside veterans on and off stage. This opportunity often sparks a new beginning for emerging talent. Thank you for supporting this initiative!

synopsis:
In 1940’s New York, the performer who everyone wanted to see live was Florence Foster Jenkins, an enthusiastic soprano whose pitch was far from perfect. Known as “The First Lady of the Sliding Scale,” she warbled and screeched her way through the evening to an audience who mostly fell about with laughter. But this delusional and joyously happy woman paid little attention to her critics, instead she was surrounded by a circle of devoted friends who were almost as eccentric as she was.
Based upon a true story, the play spins from Florence’s charity recitals and extravagant balls, through to her bizarre recording sessions and an ultimate triumph at Carnegie Hall in this hilarious and heart-warming comedy.

They are accompanied by their young French composer, Adam Adam—a former actor forced to end his stage career after contracting a strange speech impediment brought on by the return of his terrifying mother from prison.

synopsis:
Tonight, 18th century scientific genius Emilie du Châtelet is back from the afterlife and determined to answer the question she died with: love or philosophy, head or heart?
Based on the real life story of Emilie du Châtelet, a scientific genius of 18th century France. Women of her era were considered too simple-minded to understand mathematics or physics, but Emilie produced work ranging from a groundbreaking paper on the nature of fire (the first by a woman ever published by the Paris Academy), to a celebrated and still-used translation and commentary on Isaac Newton’s Principia Mathematica. She was married to a nobleman of the court of Louis XV, and took a series of lovers, including the writer and philosopher Voltaire.

Catered for our younger audience, it’s short, its sweet and it’s just the right amount of silly.

With the Emcee’s bawdy songs as wry commentary, Cabaret explores the dark, heady and tumultuous life of Berlin’s natives and expatriates as Germany slowly yields to the emerging Third Reich.
Cliff, a young American writer newly arrived in Berlin, is immediately taken with English singer Sally Bowles. Meanwhile, Fräulein Schneider, proprietor of Cliff and Sally’s boarding house, tentatively begins a romance with Herr Schultz, a mild-mannered fruit seller who happens to be Jewish.

Thornton Wilder and Ken Ludwig’s Adaptation of THE BEAUX’ STRATAGEM By George Farquhar
director_name: Michael Gareau
synopsis:
Adapted by Thornton Wilder and Ken Ludwig from the play by George Farquhar, the play tells the story of two young bucks who, having spent all their money by living too well, leave London and roam from town to town in search of love and fortune. In order to find a wealthy heiress for at least one of them, they pose as master and servant – exchanging roles from one town to the next.
In Lichfield, Aimwell is the master and Archer the servant, and there they meet the lovely, wealthy Dorinda and her equally desirable sister-in-law, Mrs. Kate Sullen. They set their caps for these women, but problems abound.
Kate is married to a drunken sot who despises her; the innkeeper’s saucy daughter, Cherry, has set her cap for Archer; Dorinda’s mother, Lady Bountiful, mistakenly believes herself to be a great healer of the sick, and she guards her daughter like a dragoness; and a band of brigands plans to rob the house of Lady Bountiful that very night, putting all schemes in jeopardy. This is a play in the great tradition of Goldsmith’s She Stoops to Conquer and Sheridan’s The Rivals and The School for Scandal. It is classic, formal, robust and hilarious.
